Standing with Bugingo

Bugingo, who founded Desire and cares for all 33 children, is in the hospital.

Bugingo “Desire” Moses rescued the Desire Kids from the slums of Kampala and has raised them as a family ever since. This month, severe malaria affected his kidneys and his blood pressure and led to a transient ischemic attack, a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain that causes stroke-like symptoms.

Those symptoms can pass without lasting damage, but only with the right care, given in time. While he is in the hospital, the daily needs of all 33 Desire Kids must still be met, and the Advisory Board is gathering the support to make sure they are.

Gifts are collected through a GoFundMe organized by Joline El-Hai, a member of Desire’s Advisory Board who is leading the crowdfunding. Joline advanced the initial $600 his hospital treatment required. The first $600 raised repays her advance, and everything after that goes directly to Bugingo’s hospital bills and the cost of his treatments. Once those are met, anything more goes into the Emergency Reserve.

Desire Child Care Organization (DCCO) is welcoming applications for both of its boards.

The Advisory Board is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. We are looking for dedicated supporters to take on three roles:

The Board of Directors governs DCCO and is being formed now. Under Ugandan NGO law, every director must be a Ugandan citizen. Both boards are volunteer positions and are unpaid.

Moreen is mending

Her surgery is done, her bill is paid, and she is home recovering well.

In August, Moreen needed surgery for fibroadenoma breast tumors, and her surgery and care came to two thousand dollars. She had the operation, and gift by gift the bill came down, until someone sent the last $132 and paid it off.

Thank you to all of Moreen's heroes who made this happen.

This campaign is closed. When the next child needs care, the Emergency Reserve is where it comes from.

Go to the Emergency Reserve

A hermit is not someone who disappears from the world. A hermit is someone who goes deep enough inside themselves to bring their light back out.

"I heard someone say that your cracks are where the light gets in, but I don't think that's true, Papa. I think our cracks are where our inner light gets out." - Cameron David Allen, age 12

Hermi's Hermits is a small, quiet circle of people who do exactly that: we go inward, we gather what we find there, and we give it back outward as concrete, dignified, swift help for the neighbors in need.

No fanfare. No credit. Just holy hands and open pockets.

Emergency Fund

The Emergency Reserve

This is the fund that stands behind every other fund on this page: sponsorships, the Goloba Amazzi Fund, the Land Fund. When something happens that none of those cover, malaria in the night, an injury, a sudden food shortage, a utility bill that has to be paid to keep the lights and water on, this is what Bugingo reaches for.

Right now, when he reaches for it, there is often nothing there. That means scraping together what he can, begging, borrowing, and scrambling in the moment, for the sake of 33 children who are counting on him to get it right. A gift here, in any amount, becomes the resource that is already waiting before the next emergency arrives.

The Goloba Amazzi Fund

2011 to 2023

Goloba was attacked and killed by wild lions while returning home from fetching water miles away. Clean water is an essential human right. No child should have to risk their life for it.

Amazzi means water. In Goloba’s honor, $35 buys 200 litres, about 53 gallons, of clean drinking water. Enough for all 33 children for a whole month. Since this campaign began, typhoid has been eliminated in the family.
